Additional information (Wiki):The
Shih Tzu is a friendly lap dog that at
one time was bred to be a companion dog
for Chinese royalty. Some say living in
the imperial palace gave the Shih Tzu an
arrogant quality, although they also
display qualities of devotion and
adaptability. They are not afraid to
stand up for themselves. They tend to be
sweet, playful, and trusting as well. It
ranks 70th in Stanley Coren's The
Intelligence of Dogs, considered one of
the lowest degree of working/obedience
intelligence (trainability). They don't
need as much exercise as larger dog
breeds, but do suffer from the same
difficulties as most small breed dogs
due to having a smaller bladder.
The Shih Tzu coat has also been listed
by many popular dog information websites
as being hypoallergenic, but this has
never been proven. All dogs shed, and it
is the dog's dander and saliva that
trigger most allergic reactions.
Allergists do recognize that at times a
particular allergy patient will be able
to tolerate a particular dog, but they
agree that "the luck of the few with
their pets cannot be stretched to fit
all allergic people and entire breeds of
dogs." The Shih Tzu coat is said to be
non shedding, which does not agree with
what biologists, veterinarians, and
allergists know about dog fur, although
allergists "think there really are
differences in protein production
between dogs that may help one patient
and not another", meaning that some
allergic people may not have allergic
reactions to a specific dog. |
